DJ Beaker

The Voice of Mount Wise

He gets to Mount Wise two hours before kickoff. Checks everything's working, gets the drone up for some shots around the ground. Then watches the crowd build.

Chris Gerry, known to most as DJ Beaker, runs the shed. The announcer's booth with what he calls "the best view" of the pitch. He does the pre-match music and the announcements. Team line-ups, goal scorers, the lot. The soundtrack to a Saturday at Mount Wise.

He's a DJ by trade, and a teacher. His route to the club started with a disco in the clubhouse. Someone passed his details to Tom, who asked if he fancied doing the pre-match warm up.

"I wish I'd got involved many years ago," he says. "It's so good up here. It's just community. It doesn't matter what your background is. You're made to feel welcomed. It's new friends. It's just such a good feeling and such a good group of people that you want to be involved, and you want to do more to help."

Born and bred in Newquay, he knows what the town's community is like. What he sees at Mount Wise feels like the same thing.

"This is what it's about. This is what the town is about. It doesn't matter your background, it doesn't matter where you come from. Come here, and you'll be involved, you'll get hyped up."

His matchday routine builds towards kickoff. Music that works for everyone, from the kids running around to the retired regulars. The tempo rises as the teams get ready to come out. Then the chosen walkout song. The noise lifts.

He's done some radio reads for the club recently. Walking around town, people stop him.

"They'll come up and say, it's so nice to see you there. It's nice that you're getting involved because you can see the direction the club's going now. And it's just infectious."

Ask him what his favourite thing is, and he doesn't talk about goals or results. He talks about seeing the children getting involved. The mascots. Kids kicking a ball around at half time.

"It makes you realise that it is for every age, and that's the future of our club. Having those children and their families here can only be positive. It makes me really happy to see children outdoors getting involved in something community based and sport based."

And if someone's heard him on the radio but never been to a match?

"If you fancy a good time that's not going to cost you a lot of money for the whole family, and you want to be part of something special that is growing and getting bigger every single week - come on down. Just come and see it. Look at how people interact, how everybody gets on, how you're welcomed. It's just a magical place to be."
